In Japan, futon care is woven into the week: bedding hung over balconies on sunny mornings is such a common sight it’s practically an art form. Your Zen.Rest needs far less — but the little it needs, it repays with years of service.
Daily: the 30-second version
Fold it. That’s it. Folding exposes the underside, lets moisture escape and stops humidity from settling between futon and floor. If you do nothing else, do this.
Weekly: the 5-minute ritual
- Air it (3 min): stand the folded futon near an open window or over two chairs. Fresh air does the deep work.
- Rotate it (30 sec): head-end to foot-end. Even wear means even comfort.
- Brush or vacuum the cover (90 sec): a quick pass removes dust before it settles in.
Monthly: wash the cover
Unzip, machine-wash at 30°C, line-dry. The cover is designed to come off in under a minute — no wrestling matches. While it dries, give the inner core its longest airing of the month.
What to avoid
Don’t soak the foam core, don’t tumble-dry the cover on high heat, and don’t store the futon compressed in a damp room. Foam remembers kindness — and neglect.
The payoff
A cared-for futon keeps its loft, its support and its freshness for years. Five minutes a week is a fair trade for a thousand good nights.
